ARFF, SAFT, Spill Fire, Intermediate, Basic 40 Hours, and SAFT-Spill Recertification

The instructors are hand picked, trained, and certified to operate the high-tech spill fire and SAFT trainer. College credits are provided to all students that successfully complete the RMESTC training courses. The Helena Regional Airport Authority and the Montana National Guard (based directly adjacent to the RMESTC) provide personnel to support the operation of the RMESTC. Courses are provided in basic aircraft fire fighting training and recertification. Additional classes include emergency medical training, disaster and emergency services, emergency management, and training classes for fire fighter instructors.

Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Basic Training

Total Hours: 40 (four 10-hour days)
Tuition: $750, plus $200 Propane Surcharge (Total: $950)

This course provides students with the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to effectively handle an aircraft emergency. It develops the students knowledge of basic fire fighting and rescue principles. The course prepares the student to quickly respond to an aircraft crash site ready to suppress fuel spill fires, evacuate, and rescue passengers. The student will become proficient in extinguishing wheel, engine, interior cabin, and compartment fires. Instruction will be received in aircraft and airport familiarization, apparatus and equipment, planning and communications, aircraft fire fighting and rescue procedures, and hazardous materials. Students will receive live fire experience and training in accordance with FAR 139.319.

Prerequisite: Must be physically able to secure SCBAs and perform physically demanding tasks.

ARFF Spill Fire Recertification

Total Hours: 10 (one 10-hour day)
Tuition: $400, plus $200 propane surcharge (Total: $600)

Course provides live fire experience for recertification under FAR 139.319. Training is provided on turret and hand line control of a simulated fuel spill fire. Upon successful completion, students will have refreshed their ability to quickly control an aircraft fuel spill fire, effectively manipulate a turret mounted spray nozzle, and to operate hand lines in the control of an aircraft fire. Students will also be given training on a live 3-D fire.

Prerequisite: Certification as an aircraft rescue fire fighter; must be physically able to secure SCBAs and perform physically demanding tasks.

Students are instructed in specialized aircraft fire fighting training using state-of-the-art 737 trainer. Students will learn to effectively extinguish engine, wheel, cockpit, cabin interior, galley, baggage compartment, aircraft rest room fires and cargo fires. They will review proper safety and rescue procedures for aircraft crash situations.

Prerequisite: Certification as an aircraft rescue fire fighter; must be physically able to secure SCBAs and perform physically demanding tasks.

Combined SAFT/Spill Fire Recertification

Total Hours: 20 (two 10-hour days)
Tuition: $525, plus $175 propane surcharge (Total: $700)

Students will review safety, use of equipment, and procedures for the suppression of fuel spill, wheel, engine, interior cabin, and compartment fires. Passenger evacuation and rescue will be covered. The student will master appropriate tactics for a given aircraft accident scenario. This course will prepare the student to quickly respond to an aircraft crash site ready to suppress cockpit/galley fires, evacuate, and rescue passengers. The student will also be prepared to extinguish wheel, engine, interior cabin, cargo, and compartment fires. Students will receive instruction in personnel safety, apparatus familiarization, and aircraft rescue and fire fighting procedures. Students will receive live fire experience and training for recertification under FAR 139.319.

Prerequisite: Certification as an aircraft rescue fire fighter; must be physically able to secure SCBAs and perform physically demanding tasks.

Course provides FAR 139.319 recertification for ARFF certified fire fighters. Emphasizes team work, extrication, and rescue techniques. Provides more extensive driver operator training. Offers specialized night time response procedures and fire fighting techniques. Additional training is provided on turret and hand line control of a simulated fuel spill fire.

Prerequesite: Certification as an aircraft rescue fire fighter; completion of FF040 ARFF Recertification or at least four to six years experience in aircraft fire fighting; must be able to secure SCBAs and perform physically demanding tasks. This is very intense training geared for the experienced fire fighter.

Class Size and Registration

In order to maximize the training experience, RMESTC class sizes are limited to provide appropriate instructor to student ratios. Minimum class size is eight students. Maximum student numbers vary with the course offered. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Special scheduling arrangements can be made for groups of eight or more from one sponsoring agency.

Cancellation or Refunds

In the event a course must be canceled by RMESTC, notification will be given 14 days in advance and full refunds will be made. Sponsoring agencies or students who withdraw must do so no later than 14 days prior to scheduled date in order to obtain a refund. If notice is not provided to RMESTC by mail, email or fax regarding cancellation or withdrawal, the sponsoring agency will be responsible for the tuition for the original number of students registered.

Responsibilities

RMESTC: The Training Center provides the facility, instructor staff, fuel, hand lines, nozzles, extinguishing agents, fire trucks, and breathing air. Turn-outs are available on site. Students and the sponsoring agency will be provided with an evaluation report of the students participation and performance during the training period. Students will receive a certificate of completion. In order to insure student safety, an inspection of protective clothing and SCBA gear provided by students will be conducted prior to actual live fire training.

Sponsoring Agency or Student: Students may provide their own NFPA approved protective clothing and SCBAs. According to NFPA, students must provide their own NOMEX hoods. Students must provide verification of their physical ability to participate in rigorous fire training.

Housing/Meals

A list of nearby motels is included. Some will offer special government rates upon request. Lunch or dinner and coffee breaks will be provided at the RMESTC and are included in training costs. Avis, Hertz, and National/Alamo operate rental car agencies at the Airport. In addition, there are several off-Airport rental car agencies in Helena.
